CASE STUDY - RENTAL HOIST OPTIONS FOR A FAMILY CRUISE
This case study looks into the difficulty of travelling while in a powered wheelchair, and the local services across East Anglia that are available to help support the family and ensure they had the best time on their P&O Cruise.
Challenge
Miss Hagg and her son who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and is in a powered wheelchair planned a cruise with P & O. After booking an accessible cabin and making P and O aware of the mobility equipment they required, she soon realised they would need to source a renal mobile hoist herself, as it was not included with the cabin booked.
“We didn’t want this to be an uphill struggle to sort, but as with booking holidays with accessible needs it often is. The very first contact we tried to speak to at P&O, wasn’t properly trained to understand the needs of people with different disabilities and couldn't point us in the right direction”.
After numerous calls, emails and searching online, it became difficult and time-consuming, trying to arrange a mobile hoist directly with the cruise line and with the cruise fast approaching, Miss Hagg decided instead to look into locally trust worthy companies that could supply and rent a mobile hoist that would meet the ship's weight capacity and ship power supply.
Solution
After researching online, weighing up the costs of potentially purchasing a second hand hoist, which was going to be too expensive for the type needed, alongside looking into customer reviews on local mobility companies, it was obvious that there was a limited amount of companies who could provide a temporary solution for their cruise.
“Carelift Services came up as one of the only companies in Norfolk that offered a rental hoist option at a good price. They also offered a delivery option, which was handy as I work full time with 2 children finding the time to collect would have been tricky, there was a refundable deposit to pay of £200 but the hoist came including the travel case for transportation and to protect it from damage, what impressed me was that they care, they gave us a service call before our trip to confirm the details / times for delivery, we had a fantastic cruise and want to thank Carelift for all their help.”
