How to Operate a Homelift

What is a LOLER inspection?
Can You Hoist Someone by Yourself?
This is a bit of a grey area. There’s no legal requirement for two people to hoist a patient, but some companies and care providers insist on it for safety reasons. In practice, you can use a hoist by yourself. However, if your workplace has a two-person rule, always follow that. Check the policy and the patient's care plan to see if it specifies two carers for hoisting. If it doesn’t, then you’re probably fine to go solo.
Why Would You Need Two Carers for Hoisting?
Two carers are often used for safety. Especially in a client's home or when using a mobile hoist, two carers can prevent strain or injury to one person.
Some older ceiling track hoist systems actually need two people. These older models are manually operated and need one carer to move the track while the other handles the patient.
Using two carers can cost more time and effort, but it's often safer.
Are There Single-User Hoist Systems?
Yes, single-user hoist systems do exist and they’re super easy to use! They free up staff and require less effort to operate.
Automated track components like transit couplings and turntables make it easy to run an overhead hoist system by yourself. These systems use sensors and magnets to detect movement and lock rails in place.
These are especially handy in care homes and hospitals where moving patients between rooms is common. They’re also great for home use, letting you move around your house without worrying about handling between rooms.
Summary
Yes, one person can use a ceiling hoist, thanks to single-user hoist systems. With modern equipment and track components, you can move patients around solo and focus on them without stressing about manual tasks.
